Ginger Johnston

2024 Ceniad Editor-in-Chief

About Me

Hi there! My name is Ginger Johnston, and I am a senior at East Lansing High School. I have been on the yearbook staff for three years.

When I joined yearbook I was an isolated sophomore after a year of online school. I was so anxious about interviewing that I felt nauseous walking into class everyday. But little by little I gained confidence interviewing, and began to love it. Hearing people's stories and thoughts captivated me like nothing before. I started to thrive through bringing those stories and thoughts to life. Little by little I grew to love yearbook, and all aspects of student journalism.

After my first year on staff enamored me with writing, I had no choice but to become copy editor my junior year. Through mastering every AP style rule I fell in love with yearbook writing even more. I became a motivator and a leader, encouraging my writers to get their work done, and assisting them in revising it until it reached its full potential.

My work on staff culminated as I took on the role I hold now, the role of Editor-in-Chief. I work closely with my co-editors, Brennan and Amelia in organizing and putting our stamp of approval on every piece of coverage in the book. While I have had to step away from writing, and more into leadership with this role, nothing makes me happier than editing a story side-by-side with a staffer.

Looking back at my yearbook experience, to me, yearbook means growth and community. I am no longer that nauseous sophomore, in or out of the classroom. Yearbook gave me the confidence to lead the start of class announcements, and to feel composed talking to anyone. Writing on staff has been the gateway to who I am today, I have met my best friends and learned the biggest lessons through yearbook.
